USAT Part II Essay Writing
Write argumentative and narrative essays with simple repeatable methods
USAT Part II gives 40 minutes for writing. The preparation target is not memorizing one perfect essay; it is learning how to decode a prompt, select a workable idea, plan quickly, develop organized paragraphs and revise before time ends.

Guide 01
Argumentative: use the SCHOLIX CLAIM + PEEL+ approach
- Clarify the exact issue and instruction before choosing a side.
- Write one clear thesis that answers the prompt directly.
- Give each body paragraph one main claim, support it with an example and explain why it proves the point.
- Use a counterpoint only when you can answer it clearly without losing focus.
- Conclude by reinforcing the position instead of introducing a new reason.
Guide 02
Narrative: use the SCHOLIX STORY sequence
- Start close to the event instead of spending too long on background.
- Keep the people, place and situation clear enough for the reader to follow.
- Build toward one meaningful conflict, surprise, decision or turning point.
- Use concrete detail selectively; do not overload every sentence with description.
- End with the consequence, realization or reflection that makes the event meaningful.
Guide 03
A practical 40-minute control plan
| Phase | Purpose | What to control |
|---|---|---|
| Choose + plan | Avoid a weak start | Pick manageable prompts and outline both responses quickly. |
| Write | Develop complete answers | Stay relevant, keep paragraphs focused and protect time for both tasks. |
| Review | Recover easy marks | Check missing words, tense, agreement, spelling and unclear sentences. |
Guide 04
Practise by theme, not by memorizing exact wording
Previous student recalls include recurring theme families such as technology, education, social media, environment, health, memorable journeys, achievements, fear, difficult decisions and important people. Practise transferring one planning skill to several related prompts so a wording change does not break your preparation.
