SCHOLIX · Guided Quantitative Course
USAT Quantitative Reasoning preparation: translate first, choose the method, then calculate
Build Quantitative Reasoning from number skills and arithmetic into algebra, geometry, equations, statistics, probability and scenario-based mental mathematics, with emphasis on selecting the correct method before doing the calculation.

Guide 01
Organize Quantitative Reasoning into skill groups
- Number systems, conversions, fractions, decimals, percentages and proportional reasoning.
- Ratios, averages, rates, work, time, speed and applied arithmetic.
- Algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, exponents, roots and logarithmic relationships where relevant to the bank.
- Geometry, angles, perimeter, area, mensuration and measurement reasoning.
- Statistics, data interpretation, probability, sequences and counting patterns.
- Scenario-based mental mathematics and mixed exam-readiness practice.
Guide 02
A reliable four-step solving method
| Step | Question to ask | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Translate | What information is actually given? | Rewrite words as numbers, units, a diagram or a simple equation. |
| 2. Choose | Which relationship or method fits? | Select the shortest valid rule before substituting values. |
| 3. Solve | Are signs, units and operations controlled? | Calculate carefully and keep enough working to catch mistakes. |
| 4. Check | Is the result possible and reasonable? | Estimate, verify units/signs and compare against the options. |
Guide 03
Representative QR situations and the thinking they require
| Question family | First move | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage change | Find the change and identify the correct base/original value. | Dividing by the new value instead of the original value. |
| Ratio/ages | Translate the ratio into parts and connect it to the stated total or difference. | Treating the ratio numbers as actual ages/amounts. |
| Speed/time | Put all speeds/times in compatible units and decide whether rates add or subtract. | Using individual speed instead of relative speed. |
| Work/pipes | Convert each worker/pipe into a per-unit-time rate. | Adding times instead of rates. |
| Equations/functions | Define the unknown and preserve the stated condition. | Losing a sign or substituting into the wrong expression. |
| Statistics/data | Identify exactly which measure the question requests before calculating. | Computing every visible statistic instead of the required one. |
Guide 04
Improve by repairing the cause of each mistake
Label errors as concept gaps, translation mistakes, method-choice mistakes, calculation mistakes or time-pressure mistakes. Your next revision session should target the cause rather than simply repeating the same question.
Begin with untimed topic sets. Move to mixed questions after the method is reliable, then add strict timing during the final exam-readiness stage. A question answered correctly by guessing should still be marked for review.
Guide 05
A practical checking routine for multiple-choice QR
- Estimate the likely size/sign of the answer before choosing an option.
- Use units to eliminate answers that cannot represent the required quantity.
- Substitute the selected answer back into an equation when that is faster than re-solving.
- For geometry or data questions, re-read what is actually being asked before using a familiar formula.
- If two options are very close, check arithmetic before changing the method.
